HAND-CARVED. FOREVER ETCHED IN HISTORY

The 66 steps were painstakingly carved from solid limestone by enslaved people between 1793 and 1794, as part of an effort to create an escape route from Fort Fincastle to Nassau Harbour. Though it wasn’t originally intended to be a tribute, the staircase was later named in honor of Queen Victoria, celebrating her role in the abolition of slavery in the Bahamas. Today, it stands as a stark reminder of the suffering endured and the resilience of those who built it, as well as a symbol of the freedom they helped pave the way for.
